Wortley Hall marks 75 years as the stately home owned by working people

Plenty of country houses offer a stately stay, but few have a story quite like Wortley Hall. On 5 May 1951 this grand house near Sheffield formally opened as an educational and holiday centre for the trade union, labour and co-operative movement, and in 2026 it marks 75 years in the hands of working people.
The hall's history runs deep. Wortley is first recorded in 1165, and Sir Richard Wortley rebuilt the hall in 1586. It later became the ancestral home of the Earls of Wharncliffe. After the army occupied parts of it during the Second World War, it fell into disrepair, and in 1950 the Wharncliffe family decided to give it up.
That was when local labour movement activist Vin Williams proposed that the hall could be owned by workers and run for their benefit. A co-operative was formed, and the hall was bought in a semi-derelict state. Workers from South Yorkshire and beyond carried out most of the repairs voluntarily, restoring the painted ceilings, ornamental friezes and wood carvings. Today it remains a non-profit co-operative, and any operating surplus goes back into the upkeep of the hall.
The Grade II* listed house sits in 26 acres of gardens and woodland, with 11 acres of formal gardens laid out in the Italianate Palladian style, much of their beauty credited to Lady Caroline Stuart Wortley in the early 1800s. The Walled Garden, built in 1797, still provides organic fruit and vegetables, and a Friends group of volunteers helps tend the grounds.
Guests can choose from 55 en suite bedrooms in the main hall, from deluxe suites with freestanding baths in the renovated attic to traditional rooms overlooking the gardens, along with three self-catering cottages in the grounds. The hall describes itself as an idyllic base for discovering Pennine Yorkshire, and it is also a licensed wedding venue that hosts no more than one wedding a day.
Michael Portillo visited for Great British Railway Journeys in 2015 to explore its trade union links, and annual events such as the South Yorkshire Festival draw visitors from across the region.
Wortley Hall is at Wortley, Sheffield, S35 7DB. Room bookings and events are on the Wortley Hall website.
