For people facing cancer in South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire, Weston Park Cancer Charity offers help that reaches well beyond the hospital ward. Based on Northumberland Road in Sheffield, the charity provides free support to patients, their families and carers, and funds research that improves treatment for the future.

It is closely linked with Weston Park Hospital in Broomhill, one of only four centres in the UK devoted entirely to cancer care. The hospital was officially opened in April 1970, and its roots go back to the Sheffield Radium Fund, set up in 1914.

The charity's support is wide-ranging. It offers advice, therapies and practical and emotional help, funds cancer research and clinical trials, and runs a free transport service taking patients to and from Sheffield hospitals, including from the Chesterfield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Meadowhall areas. Its Big Purple Bus takes services out into local communities.

Generosity from across the region makes it all possible. The charity's "see it. treat it." appeal raised £2,151,030 for an MRI simulator. In Doncaster, fundraiser Acker Shaw has raised more than £170,000 over 26 years in tribute to his late wife, collecting more than £20,000 at 140 football matches in one record year. The fourth Walk As One event pushed that event's fundraising total past £200,000.

Sheffield's institutions have played their part too. In October 2026 the Sheffield Assay Office reported that the Master Cutler's Challenge had raised £170,353 for the charity.

There is plenty more to come. Funny Business 2026, a stand-up fundraiser in which contestants write and perform their own routines, takes place at Sheffield City Hall on 12 November. The charity's Large Grants Programme for 2026/27 is open, funding new projects that aim to improve cancer outcomes in the region.

Behind the figures are real people, from patients taking part in trials to those who rely on a lift to their appointments. The charity shares their stories to show what every donation helps to achieve.
