Tom Lawson at The Psalter brings flexible fine dining to an independent hotel

On Psalter Lane, within easy reach of Sharrow Vale, The Psalter has become a proudly independent home for Sheffield hospitality. The hotel, bar and restaurant has 20 guest bedrooms, and at its heart is Tom Lawson at The Psalter, an intimate restaurant listed in the MICHELIN Guide.

The MICHELIN Guide describes experienced chef Tom Lawson taking over the boutique hotel for his latest venture, with a welcoming restaurant inside. Bright, funky wallpaper adds a splash of colour, and a large bureau is filled with Lawson's own favourite cookery books.

The restaurant has seven tables, and rather than a fixed tasting menu, guests choose their own experience. Dinner is offered as two courses for £45, three for £60, four for £75 or five for £90, and every option includes seasonal snacks and house-made bread. Tom creates the menu with head chef Gareth "Gaz" Evans, and it changes with the seasons.

One dish has become a Psalter signature: a cauliflower cheese that, according to the Guide, nods to Tom's "Grandma B". The inspectors also praised high-quality produce such as snow-white Cornish plaice with a terrific beurre blanc, and service from a friendly and confident team. The restaurant was also named Best Contemporary Restaurant at the Westside Restaurant Awards 2025.

Hospitality is clearly personal for the owner. "For me, hospitality is about making people feel genuinely welcome," says Tom Lawson. "It's remembering the little things, taking the time to talk, and caring about the experience someone has from the moment they walk through the door." The hotel's own motto sums it up: arrive as strangers, leave as friends.

Beyond the restaurant, The Psalter Bar serves coffee from 8am, a modern British bar menu and Friday small plates and cocktails, while Sunday lunch runs from 12pm to 2.30pm with generous roasts and proper gravy. The building also hosts weddings, from intimate ceremonies for six guests to full exclusive use, as well as private parties and corporate events.
