Few venues have shaped Sheffield's film culture quite like the Showroom Cinema on Paternoster Row. Described as one of Europe's largest independent cinemas, it marked its 30th year in 2025, and it has plenty to look forward to.

The Showroom has been awarded £585,000 from the BFI National Lottery Audience Projects Fund for a three-year project called Festival Foundations & Film Futures. The money will help the cinema develop a film festival for children and young people, alongside community outreach and partnerships, new working practices and wider access to screen culture. According to the BFI, the award runs from April 2026 to March 2029, and it was one of 23 projects in the fund's first round of awards.

Johnathan Ilott, Head of Programming at Showroom Cinema, said: "For over 30 years, we have expanded access to screen culture, championed diverse voices." He added that the funding would help the team "deliver even more screenings, programmes and festivals that have audiences and inclusivity at their heart."

That commitment to young people runs deep. The Showroom has been selected to deliver BFI Film Academy Yorkshire and The Humber, one of 12 new UK-wide hubs for 16 to 25-year-olds, and it already runs Young Programmer courses. This summer also brought PLAY, a new family festival of creativity focused on digital art and screen culture, which ran from 29 July to 9 August 2026.

The cinema is also home to a busy calendar of festivals, including Celluloid Screams, the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival and DocFest, as well as its own Sheffield Film Festival celebrating the city on screen. It sits beside the Work Station, which the Showroom describes as the city's longest-running creative business centre, home to more than 60 cultural, creative and digital companies in a 1930s art deco building.

In 2025 the Showroom also entered the inaugural Cinema of the Year award from the British Independent Film Awards. Chief Executive Victoria Firth said: "This award is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate independent cinema."

Thirty years on, the Showroom remains a place where new films, local stories and curious audiences meet. With fresh funding for the next generation, its next chapter looks just as bright.
