Robert Dowd and the Sheffield Steelers keep the Utilita Arena roaring

Few sporting nights in South Yorkshire compare with a big game at the Utilita Arena, and for more than three decades the Sheffield Steelers have been the reason thousands of fans make the trip.

Founded in 1991, the Steelers compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League and play in an arena with a listed capacity of 9,512. Crowds have always been part of the club's story. Their highest home attendance, 10,136, came against Nottingham Panthers in the 1995 Benson and Hedges Cup Final, and a crowd of 17,245 for a game at Manchester Storm in February 1997 set a UK record. The Boxing Day game in 2025 drew more than 9,500 fans.

The trophy cabinet is impressive. The Steelers have won every available trophy in a single season three times, in 1995-96, 2000-01 and 2023-24. That most recent Grand Slam campaign brought 45 wins and 91 points as the club claimed the league, the Challenge Cup and the play-offs. They have ten league titles in all, and followed the Grand Slam with a second-placed finish in 2024-25 and fourth in 2025-26.

Head coach Aaron Fox has led the team since April 2019 and also serves as general manager. At the heart of the side is captain Robert Dowd, whose 2025-26 campaign was his 18th season with the club. He first pulled on a Steelers shirt in 2006-07 and, after spells in Belfast and in Sweden, returned in 2013-14.

Dowd has since become the club's all-time record goalscorer, passing Steve Nemeth's mark of 356 goals. By April 2025 he had reached 374 goals and 870 appearances, second only to Jonathan Phillips, whose 1,042 appearances top the club's list.

The 2025-26 season opened with a pre-season home game against Cardiff Devils on 30 August, followed by a free shirt launch and meet the players night at the arena, before the league campaign began at home to Guildford Flames on 13 September. Those community events are part of what keeps the bond between team and city so strong.

Whether you are a season ticket holder or a first-timer, a Steelers home game is a loud, family-friendly night out. Fixtures, tickets and news are on the Sheffield Steelers website.
