Restaurant ELM: Broomhall coffee shop by day, candlelit tasting menus by night

Glossop Road in Broomhall has a new favourite. ELM describes itself as a small neighbourhood hangout, a coffee shop by day and a restaurant by night, and it has quickly caught the attention of the MICHELIN Guide, which lists it as a new entry for Sheffield.
The Guide's inspectors were taken with its rich seam of vintage cool. Retro furniture, book-laden shelves and a vinyl soundtrack give the room a throwback feel, while warm service quickly puts diners at ease. In the evening, the daytime cafe morphs into a simple candlelit restaurant.
Restaurant ELM, led by Nathan Wall, promises cooking that is refined, seasonal and unpretentious, celebrating the best of British produce with technical precision and a chilled-out soul. The wine is biodynamic, and the records are always spinning.
Dinner is served from Wednesday to Saturday, from 5.30pm, as a set menu in two lengths: a short four-course menu at £55 or a long seven-course menu at £75. There is also a three-course set lunch at £35 on Thursdays and Fridays, which is bookings only. The inspectors noted a British heart to the menus, with some complex dishes and others that shine in their simplicity, singling out a delightful chocolate namelaka with miso caramel and toasted sesame.
Local Sheffield honey is a feature of the cooking and is available to buy by the jar, a nice reminder of how rooted the place is in its neighbourhood. The restaurant welcomes guests who prefer its vegetarian menu, and asks diners to mention dietary requirements when booking.
By day, ELM's coffee shop runs from 8am on weekdays and 10am on Saturdays, with no booking needed and tables available on a first come, first served basis. The house coffee comes from Northern Weather, a roaster that shares ELM's belief in ethical and sustainable coffee production, and bags are available to take home, ground to suit your brewing method.
It is a lovely example of the kind of small, personal restaurant that makes a city's food scene special. Menus, opening times and bookings for both the coffee shop and Restaurant ELM can be found on the ELM website.
