Magna gets its own tram-train stop as Rotherham's science centre powers on

Getting to one of South Yorkshire's most dramatic attractions just became a lot easier. On 9 April 2026 a new Magna tram-train stop opened on the South Yorkshire Supertram network, right beside Magna Science Adventure Centre in Templeborough, Rotherham.
The station sits on the line between Rotherham Central and Tinsley Meadowhall South, with two tram-trains an hour, step-free access via a footbridge with lifts and a 100-space park and ride. Its steel footbridge was fabricated in Barnsley and lifted into place in October 2025. The project was paid for from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority's Transforming Cities Fund.
The destination is worth the trip. Magna occupies the vast former Steel, Peech and Tozer steelworks, known as Templeborough Steelworks, and the site was even home to a Roman fort. Designed by WilkinsonEyre, the conversion won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2001, celebrated for its use of space in the old works. The exhibitions, designed by Event Communications, went on to win Best Exhibition at the 2002 Design Week Awards, and Magna collected an Enjoy England Gold Award for Business Tourism in 2006.
Inside, four hands-on pavilions explore Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The hourly Big Melt recreates electric arc furnace steelmaking with fog, sparks, flames and propane blasts, a reminder of the industry that once filled the building. Outside, the Sci-Tek play area and Aqua-Tek water play keep younger visitors busy.
Magna is a lively events venue too. It has hosted the Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival since 2011, raising money for local charities, and in 2025 it welcomed CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival Winter.
The autumn calendar is full. Wicked Week brings Halloween fun from 24 October to 1 November 2026, followed by Peaty's Bike Bonanza on 8 November and an ABBA party night on 14 November. Magna has also started a sustainable coffee partnership with Sheffield roastery Cafeology, and work has begun on a Templeborough Business Zone next to the site.
An annual pass is available for regular visitors, and tickets can be booked online. Magna is on Sheffield Road, Templeborough, and full details are on the Magna website.
