High on the western edge of Sheffield, in Crosspool, sits a ground with a claim no other can match. Sandygate, home of Hallam FC, is recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest football ground in the world.

The site opened in 1804 and Hallam have played there since the club's formation in 1860. On 26 December 1860, Sandygate staged the world's first inter-club football match, when Hallam took on Sheffield FC. The fixture between the two clubs is still known as the Rules derby, a nod to the Sheffield Rules under which the early game was played.

Hallam were also early winners. In 1867 they lifted the Youdan Cup, described as the first football competition. Known as The Countrymen, the club has kept its identity through more than a century and a half of change.

Sandygate remains a proper community ground, shared with Hallam Cricket Club and owned and run by the football club. It holds 1,665 people, 250 of them seated, and spectators can watch from three sides: the Shed End, the Main Stand and the Cricket Net End. The covered Shed End terrace behind the goal on Sandygate Road is where home supporters gather and create much of the atmosphere.

Recent seasons have brought real progress on the pitch. Hallam won the Northern Counties East League Division One title in 2021-22. In 2024-25 they finished second in the NCEL Premier Division and then beat Beverley Town on penalties in the play-off final, earning promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One East. Their first season at that level ended with a solid 12th-placed finish out of 22.

In May 2026, Danny and Richard Patterson took charge as joint managers, and the club has been busy off the pitch too. This autumn it held its annual general meeting and has been inviting local businesses to sponsor matchdays and match balls for the rest of the 2026/27 season.

For football lovers, a visit to Sandygate is a pilgrimage worth making: a non-league afternoon at the place where club football's story really began.

Fixtures, tickets and club news are on the Hallam FC website, and the ground is at Sandygate, Sheffield S10 5SE.
